MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING

IS MRI SECURE OR NOT?

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING

People undergo magnetic resonance imaging procedures all the time, and many doctors claim it to be the safest method of determining the details of tissues and organs in the body.

However, there is always a question looming over it about the safety of MRI scans. Let us take a detailed look into it.

What is MRI?

Magnetic resonance imaging or MRI is a method of capturing body structure images by using radio waves. They are beneficial for physicians in diagnosing probable diseases and conditions. Moreover, modern MRI can develop a 3-D, cross-sectional image of the entire internal body.

Why is MRI Used?

MRI scanner services are mostly used in the following cases

  • To identify the tumor, anomalies, cyst in several regions of the body
  • To detect a few types of cardiac issues
  • If there is an anomaly in the brain and spinal cord
  • For the screening of breast cancer for women
  • Liver diseases
  • Abdominal organ diseases
  • Identifying the pelvic pain and other pelvic issues in women, including endometriosis and fibroids.
  • To evaluate the fertility problems in women and other uterine issues

Who Should Avoid MRI Scanner Services?

Although MRI scans ensure complete safety, there are a few conditions where MRI may not be a suitable option for you and present unsafe consequences to you.

    • If Your Body Has a Metal Inside

The fact is that MRI machines use radio waves and strong magnets to attract the metal implanted in your body, such as artificial joints, heart valves, limbs, bullets, surgical clips, wire mesh, screws, and other metal fragments that could eventually hurt you.

    • If A Pacemaker Is Implanted in Your Body

The equipment, such as a pacemaker or cochlear implanted in your body, can get damaged from magnetic resonance imaging as metals can reduce the MRI images’ quality.

    • If You Have a Body Piercing On You

If you have body piercing metals on your body, it can disrupt the quality and get damaged during the MRI process. Thus, you are always instructed to take off your jewelry, watches, buttons, dentures, and hearing aids before you undergo the procedure.

    • If You Have Tattoos

The inks of some tattoos contain metal, and we know that metal is a big No for MRI scanner service. Therefore, it is essential to determine your tattoo’s ink before you plan to go for an MRI scan.

    • If You Have Kidney Problems

MRI scans require a contrast dye that contains meta gadolinium for doctors to see the images clearly, but if you have kidney issues, the dye can cause problems. Discuss this condition with the doctor beforehand to figure out the solution.

    • If You Are Pregnant

MRI does not harm the baby’s growth; it only increases the temperature inside the body which is why it is not suggested during the first trimester.

    Is MRI Harmful?

No. MRI scanner services are completely secure unless you have one of the conditions mentioned above. It is always suggested to talk to the doctor about all pre-existing minor and major health concerns you may have.

At AQMDI, we ensure that our patients are always at ease and smoothly undergo the MRI procedure, keeping every health condition in mind. Our radiology centers are available in Edison, Elizabeth, and New Jersey with affordable imaging.
